Complex Bowel Care

What are the benefits of engaging with our services?

Stoma care – Support is provided for individuals with a colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy to maintain hygiene, prevent infection, and ensure proper functioning of the stoma. This includes emptying and changing the appliance, monitoring the skin around the stoma, recognising signs of complications such as prolapse or blockage, and providing education and emotional support to help individuals adjust to life with a stoma.

Use of suppositories or enemas – These are administered as part of a bowel management plan to assist with stimulating bowel movements, especially in individuals with chronic constipation or neurogenic bowel conditions. Proper technique and monitoring are essential to minimise discomfort, ensure effectiveness, and prevent complications such as bowel trauma or dependency.

Monitoring for signs of impaction or obstruction – Ongoing observation is essential for individuals at higher risk of faecal impaction or bowel obstruction due to factors such as immobility, neurological conditions, or chronic constipation. Staff must be vigilant for symptoms such as abdominal pain, distension, nausea, reduced or absent bowel movements, and changes in behaviour, and escalate concerns promptly.

Bowel condition monitoring – This involves regular tracking of symptoms associated with chronic bowel conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diverticulitis, or persistent constipation. Monitoring includes recording bowel habits, consistency and frequency of stools, and noting any signs of bleeding, pain, or incontinence, in order to support clinical decision-making and promote early intervention.

Nutritional support – Diet and fluid intake are adjusted to support optimal bowel function. This includes ensuring adequate hydration and providing appropriate levels of fibre based on the individual’s needs and condition. Collaboration with a dietitian may be required to develop a bowel-friendly meal plan that balances individual preferences with clinical requirements.

Medication administration – This includes the safe and timely administration of prescribed medications such as laxatives, stool softeners, bulking agents, or anti-diarrhoeal drugs. Monitoring for effectiveness and potential side effects is essential, as well as ensuring medications are stored correctly and administered in accordance with prescriber instructions and relevant medication management protocols.
